What are the Seven Wonders of the World

The article simply describes about the ‘New Seven Wonders of The World’. The first list about ‘the seven wonders of ancient world’ was made more than 2000 years ago by the adventurer Hellenic travellers. But many of the construction from original list has been destroyed over years, except from the great pyramid of Giza.

In 2001 Swiss Canadian filmmaker Bernard Weber has made another list of the new 7 wonders foundation which is the current list of seven wonders of the world of modern era. This was made by public votes, asking many members in public and after many months of careful deliberation, debates and shortlisting, these impressive structures had listed themselves as the new seven wonders of the world.

1. The Colosseum, Rome, Italy:

Coliseum was one of the liveliest places in ancient Rome. This was a great amphitheatre. One of the largest amphitheatres that’s ever built was constructed back from AD72 to AD80 with sand and stone over a course of eight years. This structure in the central Rome that was the fighting place of the great gladiators.

This structure can hold a huge crowd of 80,000 spectators in a circular ring around the stage in middle. Many dramatic events, even horrifying ones took place here which were not limited to the gladiator games but also placed animal hunts to the executions. All done in the middle-highlighted stage of The Colosseum.

Even some water was pumped into the arena for practicing sea battles. Damaged by earthquakes and other natural events over sanctuaries, the Colosseum is one of the iconic momentous of Roman history. There’s no doubt this makes the seven wonders of the world list glorious.

2. The Taj Mahal, India:

This stunning white mausoleum was made using marvel in the Bank of Yamuna River in India. It has been selected as one of the seven wonders of the world. Mughal Shahjahan had built it as a tomb, for his loving wife Mumtaz Mahal she died during childbirth. This Marble Dome which is centred and surrounded by the 42 acres of grounds, gardens, houses, pools make the complex.

This entire project was done over 22 years to complete approximately 20,000 workers spending ₹32 million (in today’s standards which is US 827 million dollar). But the hard work really paid off because today Taj Mahal is recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites and attached itself to India’s rich Mughal history.

3. The Great Wall of China:

The Great Wall of China that spread miles over the northern border of China and creates a huge barrier. It was begun as a series of walls back at the 7th century BCE as protective barriers against the nomadic raids. It was developed over the millennia. China’s first emperor Qin Shi Huang had this planned of unified China’s all walls for the strong-stand barrier which overall strengthen and extend the wall for stopping the northern invaders.

And here are we, after so many time passed, the Great Wall of China finally recognized as to be in the seven wonders list. It has a whopping branch length of about 13,001 seven one miles.

4. Christ the Redeemer, Brazil:

At 30 meters of height, on the top of mountain Corcovado, Christ the Redeemer stands in Rio de Janeiro. This totemic statue is one of the iconic emblems of Brazil. This massive sized artwork was planned by Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski (1920s) and was made by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, French engineer Albert Caquot (1931).

Using reinforced concrete glad in approximately 6 million of soapstone tile, it is the one of the largest sculptures in the world. It is made just after the end of First World War. It overpowers as a symbol and makes the symbol of Christianity and hope when the world was brought to blues. So, it is pretty obvious thing that this monument should be in today’s 7 wonders list.

5. Chichén Itzá, Mexico:

Build between 9th and 12th centuries in a historic Mayan city. Constructed by pre-Columbian Mayan tribes. This city has a series of many monuments, temples. This is deep inside Mexican state of Yucatán. Between them there is El Castillo, also known temple of Kukulcan. It is a devotional temple of the God Kukulcan that is in the middle of the city.

The entire temple has 365 steps for representing each day of the year. The spring and summer equinoxes, afternoon, the shadow casted by the sun is triangular and down to the pyramid’s Northsides stairway which symbolizes a feathered serpent slithering down its surface. Towards its to a head of stone snake in the base. This marvellous piece should be kept in the seven wonders list today.

6. Machu Pichu, Peru:

High in the Andes mountains all the way up above the Peruvian sacred valley, there lies a lost treasure of 15th century. A very rare undiscovered citadel is finally found and it is astonishing pre-Columbian ruins. They were found approximately intact which shows evidence of previous temples, agricultures, historical houses, plazas, terrain plans.

According to archaeologists, this citadel, what’s expected to be built by an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (around 1450) with polished drystone walls. Inkas abandoned the area a few centuries later. This was hidden before American historian Hiram Bingham (1911) discovered and brought it do the public attention. This outstanding preservation makes it recognizable as one of the seven wonders today.

7. Petra, Jordon:

In southern Jordan, the ancient city of Petra also known as the Rose city (312 BC). Arab Nabataeans founded this in a remote valley. This sophisticated civilization that covered many outstanding architecture and complex waterways with help of available rock faces.

Nabataeans also made Petra a very successful trading hub which made it wealthy and popular though being wiped out by earthquakes. Though it was kept undiscovered but it uncovered itself in 1812, discovered by Swiss explorer named Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.
